Ramlösa

The Ramlösa spa was officially opened by King Charles XII of Sweden in 1707. The spa was under leadership of the initiator Johan Jacob Döbelius, a district medical officer whose interest in the water was roused by the many local accounts of its healing properties. The spa’s water (a heavier variety of the current bottled one) was known to bring relief to ailments such as vertigo, gout and stomach disorders, to name a few. The poor could enjoy the water at no charge, although they had to get up early as their turn was first at 4 o'clock in the morning. Then followed the farmers and manual labourers, until about 11 o'clock in the morning when the rich came down to enjoy the spring water. The Ramlösa source was only discovered at the end of the 19th century, and by pure chance. It is an excellent water, ideal for quenching a thirst or accompanying a meal. It takes a full 70 years for a drop of rainwater to finally reach the source. By then it has travelled 90 metres through 20 layers of sandstone. All impurities have been filtered out while minerals were absorbed. The water is not naturally carbonated, but because of its salty character, 5 g of carbon dioxide per litre is added to sweeten the taste.
